Grapefruit Coconut Sugar Scrub
An easy recipe for a zesty, grapefruit and coconut sugar scrub that will leave your skin feeling soft and fresh this spring.
If you are like the next woman, you probably enjoy a good skin scrub every now and again. Whether you use one ritually, only when you're gifted one around the holidays, or just when you're pampered at the nail salon, using a sugar scrub to exfoliate and soften your skin can feel like a mini spa treatment. Whipping up your own scrub allows you to control the ingredients, and pamper your body with an all-natural exfoliant. If you read our post here on seasonal produce, then you'll know that citrus fruits are in season right now. I shared some fun lemon dessert ideas, but what about a citrus infused body scrub to leave your skin soft, glowing, and vibrant, a perfect combination for the warmer weather?! Cue the grapefruit and coconut sugar scrub!
Grapefruit is not only wonderful for your overall health when eaten as a quick snack, it can be really great for your skin when used topically. The natural acids that exist in grapefruit, much like any other citrus fruits, can work to exfoliate dead skin cells. This is a perfect combination when used with sugar in a scrub. The sugar and grapefruit juice exfoliate and brighten, while the coconut oil works to soften and moisturize the skin. All the while, the high amounts of Vitamin C in grapefruit can add an extra does of antioxidants to protect the skin and help the formation of collagen. Different varieties of grapefruit are high in beta-carotene, which helps the aging of skin cells. Have you ever heard of salicylic acid? I remember seeing this acne fighting powerhouse as the main ingredient in a lot of different skin products I used when I was younger. Well, salicylic acid occurs naturally in grapefruits, making it helpful in the fight against acne. As a final bonus, grapefruit juice and extract has a natural fragrance that will leave your skin smelling sweet and tangy!
Now, the coconut oil used in this scrub will have a stronger coconut scent depending on the type of oil and the different brand you use. My coconut oil that I use regularly has a pretty strong coconut scent (which I love as I really enjoy the taste and smell of coconut), but if you are looking for something less fragrant be sure to check the label. Also, if you are wondering where to find grapefruit essential oil, check your local grocery store and look in the pharmacy section by the vitamins. Most grocers carry a wide variety of essential oils. If you don't have the grapefruit essential oil or you just want to use what you have on hand, simply omit it and add in a little extra juice and zest. Enjoy!
- 1/2 cup coconut oil (melted or softened)
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1-2 Tbsp. grapefruit juice
- zest from one grapefruit
- 10-15 drops grapefruit essential oil
Combine all of the ingredients in a bowl, and mix with the paddle attachment on your stand mixer or with a handheld mixer. Add more sugar or coconut oil as needed until it reaches the desired consistency. Using an electric mixer will help to combine the ingredients quicker, and make the scrub more soft and smooth, almost whipped in texture, but you can mix by hand if you like. Store in an airtight container. To use: spread over skin and rub in a circular motion to exfoliate, soften, and brighten. Rinse and repeat!
When you've extracted the juice out of your grapefruit and used the zest, drizzle some honey over top, scrape the sides to loosen the fruit, and enjoy as a snack!
