What is a trifle?

A trifle is a dessert that usually includes a layer of sponge cake or regular cake that's been soaked in some kind of alcohol and is then followed by layers of preserves, custard, and cream. Nowadays, the word trifle is used fairly loosely to to describe any kind of dessert with different layers, and usually a cream and a cake layer. This Mason Jar Trifle has a layer of white chocolate drizzled pound cake, fruit, and a white chocolate pudding/cream layer. YUM!

Mason Jar Trifle

Trifles can be stored in anything you choose, preferably something clear so all of the layers can be seen. This Patriotic mason jar trifle is a spin off of a favorite dessert in our family, Red, White, & Blueberry Pie! Its one of our go-to summertime desserts. My brother requests it every year on his birthday. Using the mason jars allows you to show off the fun, patriotic colors, and serve it quick and easy to your guests. You won't have to cut any pie slices, you can just grab a jar and go.

If you are serving a larger group of people you can use smaller mason jars. The pound cake and custard cream are pretty rich and will go a long way!

Patriotic Mason Jar Trifle

  • 1 whole 9x3 pound cake or angel food cake

  • 1 quart fresh strawberries, rinsed and dried

  • 1.5 cups fresh blueberries, rinsed and dried

  • 4 oz white chocolate

  • 3/4 cup cold milk

  • 1 package (8oz) cream cheese, softened

  • 1 package (3.3 oz) white chocolate instant pudding mix

  • 1 cup thawed, frozen whipped cream (optional for garnish)

Slice strawberries with egg slicer or by hand, and set aside. Cut cake into one inch cubes and place on parchment paper. Melt white chocolate in microwave or in double boiler, and drizzle melted chocolate over cake cubes (let sit until chocolate is hardened, but not so long that the cake begins to dry out).

Blend cream cheese, milk, and pudding mix together with handheld mixer (its important that you don't use sugar free or fat free pudding mix, as this can effect the texture and flavor). Blend until the mixture is smooth and creamy. Once the white chocolate on the cake has hardened, begin to layer the ingredients in your mason jars, starting with the cake first, followed by a layer of strawberries, a layer of pudding mixture, and a layer of blueberries. You can top it all off with a dollop of whipped cream if you like! These can be stored in the refrigerator until ready to serve. Enjoy!

Note: You can use whatever kind of mason jar you prefer, but smaller, less deep mason jars will be easier to eat out of and a more appropriate proportion. If you have any melted, white chocolate left, dip a few strawberries in it and place them on top of the whipped cream.

Pin it for later!
